Carved from a monolithic limestone rock in the form of a colossal sphinx lying on the sand, the face of which, as has long been believed, was given a portrait likeness to the pharaoh Khafre (c. 2575–2465 BC), whose funerary pyramid is located nearby. The statue is 73 meters long and 20 meters high, making it the largest single-stone statue in the world. A small shrine was located between the front paws. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest of the Egyptian pyramids, a monument to ancient Egyptian architectural art; the only one of the "Seven Wonders of the World" to survive to this day, and the oldest, estimated to be approximately 4,500 years old. Located on the Giza Plateau near the Egyptian capital and the Nile Delta, on the left bank, it is the northernmost of the plateau's three great pyramids, named after three pharaohs of the Old Kingdom from the Fourth Dynasty, who are believed to have commissioned their construction: Cheops (Khufu), Khafre (Khafra), and Menkaure (Menkaure). The three pyramids—with their sides precisely oriented to the four cardinal directions—were built near the cities of Memphis (the capital of the Old Kingdom) and Heliopolis, millennia before the founding of Cairo. It is a single-tiered pyramid with smooth sides and a square base. Its casing was removed under Sultan Barquq in 1395, and its apex forms a platform 10 meters long and wide. With an original height of almost 147 meters, for over three millennia (until the construction of Lincoln Cathedral, England, around 1300; the estimated height of the lost spire is 160 meters), the pyramid was the tallest structure on Earth.
